April 30, 2025 [Spirit Lens]
I've been revisiting the card design for Spirit Lens to feel more authentic to the N64 era, late 90s to early 00s.
They are starting to feel like magazine scans from a hazy memory, which I love.
Here's a look at some of the iterations we have made over the years so you can see the developments and changes in style:
Year | Design | Notes |
---|---|---|
Late 2021 | ![]() |
Earliest card design, all the gear, no idea — early custom Glyph font. |
Late 2021 | ![]() |
More of the same but with graphics from prototype of the game. |
Early 2022 | ![]() |
Refinement of glyphs idea and inclusion of English text. |
Mid 2022 | ![]() |
Inclusion of 'Spirit Icon' showing which spirit you have captured. |
Early 2023 | ![]() |
Shrinking of icon, separation of image and info, foil stamp a la Yu-Gi-Oh! |
2023-2024 | ![]() |
Improved details on the above — less techy, more papery. |
2024-2025 | ![]() |
‘Paper’ silhouette version which appeared in the demo at GaMaYo 2024. Inclusion of our own Spirit Lens Glyph font. |
2025–Present | ![]() |
Polaroid aspect ratio, cuter aesthetic, more desirable. |
So that's the history of the card designs from 'Spirit Lens'.
Who knows how many more times they will be iterated, but for now I'm pretty happy with the design.
I will be posting more as we work on the game in our custom engine.
